| The
Child Study Centre of the Psychology Department at the
University of Western Australia houses a variety of
facilities. Kindergartens There are three well-equipped kindergartens, one for 5 year old children, one for four year olds and one for children with special needs. Each kindergarten room is fitted with a one-way mirror and can be viewed from a sound-linked viewing room. Learning Clinic A suite of three rooms fitted for use as interviewing and testing rooms form the Learning Clinic. These rooms are linked by microphone and one-way mirrors. Test Library The test library houses the largest collection of psychological assessment materials in Western Australia. Baby Laboratory This laboratory is fitted with video equipment which enables babies' eye movements to be recorded. The facilities of the CSC enable it to fulfill three important functions within the Psychology Department and wider community: |

| The kindergartens are used in a variety of ways in undergraduate teaching in developmental psychology, while the Learning Clinic resources form an integral part of both undergraduate and M. Psych training in assessment, interviewing and counselling. | |||||||

| Each year
children in the kindergartens are involved in a number of
research projects, either as participants in studies of
young children, or to help students or staff refine
materials and instructions for studies that will be completed elsewhere. Currently the Child Study Centre is operating as a Focus School of the Education Department of Western Australia (EDWA). EDWA has selected nine schools within the state to be involved in research and development projects aimed at improving practice in early childhood education. Several doctoral students, working with Dr Jan Fletcher, are involved in projects relating to the focus of early identification and intervention for children with special needs. For more details on Focus School projects please follow the Focus School links. During school holidays when the Kindergartens are not operating, their rooms are used by Dr Mike Anderson and his team who are involved with Project KIDS, an ARC funded project investigating the development of cognitive abilities in children. The Baby Lab is also used as part of this project, investigating attention in nine-month old infants. For more information on Dr Anderson's research & Project KIDS visit the Big Lab webpage. |

| The three
kindergartens offer a valued community service as a
result of a unique partnership between EDWA and the
University of Western Australia. EDWA provides the teachers
who have been through a special selection procedure; the
university supplies the buildings and infrastructure
support and parents provide equipment. The kindergartens for four and five year olds cater for children from the local community while the Special Needs Unit provides small group support to children of pre-school age from the larger metropolitan area who can not cope with full integration at this stage of their development. The Learning Clinic provides a thorough psycho-educational assessment for a limited number of children with learning difficulties as part of a demonstration to students of assessment techniques. |
